Something Always Comes Up

I have a list of things I want to be working on. I write this list out on a piece of paper. I also have a running list of things in my head of things I want to be doing. Reading and writing are ALWAYS ON ALL THE LISTS.

I think I’m a pretty disciplined writer and reader. I’ve gotten good a prioritizing these lists and making sure that reading and writing is something that always gets checked off.

But then…

Something comes up.

An editing gig that pays really well. #money

An exciting guest speaking opportunity. #literacyforkids

An ache busts my body and I need to rest. #aging

SOMETHING. ALWAYS. COMES. UP.

I know this happens to you.

And what I want to say is that…it’s okay.

Your body, mind and soul are trustworthy.

Sometimes you gotta follow the mind and take the paying gig.

Sometimes you gotta follow the body and go.to.bed.and.sleep.yo.

Sometimes you gotta get in front of a group of people and share your gifts.

Sometimes you gotta read.

Sometimes you gotta write.

You know.

I’ll say it again.

You know.

Right now, I should be editing for that paid gig.

Right now, I want to be reading The Bridges of Madison County whilst on the sofa, and wearing my jammies and no bra.

Right now, I want to be revising my YA novel.

The thing about the ‘right now’ is that there’s often only one way to live it. By choosing one thing and giving it your full attention – mind, body and soul.

This takes practice.

The struggle is real.

But, friends, it’s all okay. It’ll all get done.

Or it won’t.

And you’ll know what to do.

Because your creative heart will always be the best decision-maker.

Write that list. Cross shi*t off.

Or don’t.

Whatever you choose – you’re not alone in the struggle.
