Memoir Part II – Writing Your Story – Workshop Seminar 1

8 wk workshop seminar

Workshop Your Story!

Utilize the ideas you’ve gathered from Memoir Part 1 – Unfolding Your Story, and begin writing your memoir. Over 8 bi-weekly classes, your writing will be workshopped by other writers in the class as well as by published writers in the field. You will submit writing every other week that will be workshopped as well as workshop other’s writing. This is a safe, honest, compassionate space for constructive criticism that will move your story forward each week. If you have not taken Memoir Part 1 – Unfolding Your Story but you have memoir ideas gathered that you’d like to have workshopped, please, join us! Memoir Part II – Writing Your Story – Workshop Seminar 1 is a sacred place to bring your memoir alive on the page.

I will be teaching this class bi-weekly in conjunction with Marty Gervais’ writing salon (http://martygervaispoetlaureate.wordpress.com). While it’s not mandatory that you attend the writing salons, it is a great opportunity to get feedback from other writers in the community, not to mention Marty himself.

Marty’s writing salon begins Monday, January 16, 2012 at 5:30pm in the same room we had our memoir class at the university. It meets every other week. On the ‘other’ weeks is when we’ll meet and do our workshopping.

On the weeks labeled ‘HAND IN WRITING’, you will have to hand in UP TO 10 PAGES OF WRITING. Less than ten pages is fine, but please do not hand in more than ten.
10 pages, double-spaced (unless it’s poetry, then please single space) in .doc file ONLY (not .docx or .pdf or .wps)
We will send this writing to each other via email on these weeks which will give us the week to read over each other’s work, and offer constructive criticism.
We will be workshopping each other’s work. I will put a cap on class size as the more students in the class means the more work we have to read! But remember, we’ll have two weeks at a time to do the editing/writing.
This will certainly be a writing-intensive class so if you’re ready for it, please join!
On our off weeks, you can also choose to attend Marty’s salon, as mentioned before, to get even more feedback on your work.

Here are the dates of the class, the location,  and the cost information:

Class 1 will include a lesson on ‘critiquing’ and workshopping. It will also be the first time we hand in our writing. Please make sure you have emailed your 5 pages to those in the class BEFORE class starts. I will make sure you get everyone’s email addresses BEFORE this date! This way, we’ll have something to work with the first week while IN CLASS. You do not have to read/edit it beforehand. Please know that you will have to hand your edits/comments to each other during our in-class sessions so we each have a hard-copy of the critiques. If you do not have a printer at home, please let me know so we can arrange a suitable way for you to print out your comments. Comment sheets will be provided.
