POEM A DAY – February 16

A Flock of Finches in Western Bay
For C

the finches have arrived
flitting and floating down, down, down
to the box of seeds outside the writer’s window

heads flicking, beaks foraging
in dark nourishment
freely gifted, warmed under pale sun

winter is shifting
her thickened thighs opening
toward spring’s warmth

and the cat watches
considers, pounces
startling the finches to flight

of course, they return
hungry and humbled
feathered gold, a mere tinsel

marinating outbursts
for future skyscapes, and
darting over humpback whales

Happy Family Day!
