I just spent three glorious days in the fabulous borough that is Manhattan in New York City. (I learned this from a fantastic children’s book entitled, This Is New York by Miroslav Sasek). Everywhere I looked was a photo waiting to be snapped. My friend and I rode the subway and explored the food, smells, shopping and people of SoHo, TriBeCa, Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Little Italy, Times Square, Wall Street, the upper west side and Central Park. We did a lot in three days but NYC is the place to do a lot in.
We devoured muffins, cupcakes and brownies (yes, all three) from Magnolia Bakery. We shopped like we’d won the lottery at this three story clothing store called Filene’s Basement that was like a Winner’s on steroids. We ate sumptuous Mexican at Cafe Frida, matzoh ball soup and cherry cheesecake at Carnegie Deli, and delicious breakfast at Jerry’s Cafe. We ate, we walked, we talked, we ate some more. It was truly delightful. We even caught a film at a gigantic AMC. We watched ‘Bridesmaids’ and laughed the popcorn right out of our mouths (Go, Kristin Wiig – co-writer and co-producer of ‘Bridesmaids’…not to mention hysterical lead actress!!).
I feel at home in Manhattan. I hope I get to live there one day. I think I’m an upper west side kinda gal.
The funniest was when people stopped us to ask us for directions. Ha! I guess ‘feeling’ at home can make you ‘look’ at home too!
We watched ridiculously talented under 12-year-olds dance and sing in ‘Billy Elliot – The Musical’. We were pretty much speechless after, wondering how children that young can be that talented night after night…how do they know at such a young age that a broadway stage is where they want to be? I guess they just answer the call. We wondered what type of ‘calls’ our kids would hear…and answer to.
We talked a lot about the Casey Anthony trial…and watched the courtroom proceedings unfold when we returned home for the night.
Thank you, New York City. You are amazing.
