In it
in the smell of Spring’s breezy exhalation:
my anxious youth
track meets where I hid under the bleachers and cried
classrooms wet with stifled heat and math I didn’t understand
teachers who understood my passion for words
the wobbly possibility of a lunch-hour romance
the first time I shaved my legs brown hairs curling down the tub drain like caterpillars
the promise of summer solid like Nonna’s shoulders
all of it – my waving youth
in the smell of Spring’s perfect exhalation
