POEM A DAY – January 11

My husband and I went out for dinner at the restaurant our daughter works at. We sat down, excited to see her in action. We waited for menus. They didn’t come. “Oh, you have to scan the QR code to get the menu,” our daughter said. Huh.

This poem is a black-out or erasure poem. The text was copied from the AI-generated information on Google when I searched ‘what does the QR in QR code mean?’ as well as one paragraph from the QR Code Wikipedia page. I added one word six times.

I was quietly enraged to HAVE TO use my phone to get information for the food available at the restaurant. I also felt…frustrated, old, and exhausted because, of course, my phone would’t load the menu even though a foot away, my husband’s phone had no issues loading it. Then, I couldn’t read the writing, so I had to zoom in and that messed up the images. It was not a pleasant experience.

The meal was yummy, and it was fascinating witnessing our daughter in work-mode, but my favourite parts of the experience had NOTHING to do with our damn cell phones. The human interaction, the laughter, the sharing of food…remember?
