POEM A DAY – February 26

Writing The Novel, Year Three

You realize that all the characters in the novel you’ve been writing are parts of You. You realize that healing is spectral magic sifting through the fractures you’ve suffered into as you breathe, breathe, breathe through this living we mash up with the hammers of time. You realize the air in the spaces you hear popping between the vertebrae of your spine are your soul’s entry points…its starry pieces jumping inside you for a jaunt to jog your cell memories into remembering their light. You realize that all this time, what you’ve really been doing is structuring your broken parts into plot points and revising your decisions through the voices of your characters. You’ve even been redirecting the truth of your real-life antagonist into a warm secondary character who is able to change, to apologize, to put his wounds on the bookshop table right beside yours. You realize that your desire to be read is steeped in your desire to write, and that in the love of writing, you can release the outcome of who will read and when…and even why. It is enough to give your parts a page playground. It is enough to tell the story, to show the parts that they all belong.

for fun…would you pick up a book with this cover?!
