POEM A DAY – May 2

The Morel of the Story

the black morel foraging trifecta:
moisture
temperature
trees

& I reckon a spring-sprouting
douse of luck is necessary too
& keeping your eyes ground-ward
& your hope skyward

your brain will feel awkward
when it registers the fungi
clearly a very long lost cousin
of its gooey-folded form

C tells me you have to clean
them well, they’re filled with
bugs: aradids, springtails, rove
beetles…and, I’m out

to forage for the box of Triscuits
the sweet green grapes, smoked
gouda and four salty slices of
prosciutto

  1. Oh the pricey morels, Only found after fire I’m told, rare and tasty Regular buttons I embrace the dirt, the manure for taste and extra vitamins for sure Never ever wash

Magical, mmmm micro keeps me happily moving in my mountain life Lions mane keeps me focused and alert Triscits are a way of my life too, the bread, the carbs with the holey white stuff and a couple lovely olives… good to go!
